Background of the study
Indigenous Nigerian languages, including those spoken by the Fulani, are subject to continuous semantic change driven by social, economic, and cultural forces. Among the Fulani, language contact with dominant languages such as Hausa and English, as well as internal generational shifts, contribute to the evolution of word meanings. This study assesses semantic change by examining historical documents, recorded conversations, and modern media usage among the Fulani. Observations indicate that many traditional lexical items have undergone semantic broadening, narrowing, or shifting, reflecting adaptation to new social realities and cultural exchanges (Bello, 2023). The research explores how these semantic changes affect communication, cultural identity, and the preservation of indigenous knowledge. By mapping the trajectories of selected lexical items over time, the study aims to reveal the underlying processes of semantic evolution and propose strategies to document and preserve the linguistic heritage of the Fulani (Udo, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although semantic change is a natural part of language evolution, there is limited research focusing on its effects in indigenous Nigerian languages among the Fulani. Preliminary evidence suggests that rapid semantic shifts may lead to loss of traditional meanings and cultural disconnection. This study addresses this gap by systematically analyzing semantic change and its implications for language preservation.

Objectives of the study

  • To document key instances of semantic change among Fulani speakers.
  • To analyze the factors driving these changes.
  • To propose strategies for preserving traditional meanings.

Research questions

  • What semantic changes are occurring in Fulani language usage?
  • What factors contribute to these shifts?
  • How do these changes affect cultural identity and communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the dynamics of semantic change in indigenous languages, offering valuable data for language preservation and cultural continuity among the Fulani. Its findings will inform educators, linguists, and policymakers.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to assessing semantic change in indigenous Nigerian languages among the Fulani and does not include other linguistic features or ethnic groups.

Definitions of terms

  • Semantic Change: The process by which word meanings evolve over time.
  • Indigenous Languages: Native languages spoken by original inhabitants of a region.
  • Fulani: An ethnic group in Nigeria with its own distinct language and cultural heritage.
